EASY WAY TO REGISTER AND PROTECTTRADEMARKS IN AFRICA

Mkama Magoti Kalebu

One of thecheapest ways to protect trademarks by registration in Africa is through theAfrican Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO). Through ARIPO, youcan protect your logo/symbol, number, name, phrase, or business name in thesame way you would do through filing in the respective countries such as Tanzaniaor Zimbabwe.

It is cheaper to go through ARIPObecause no need to hire trademark agent in every state/country. Only one agent approvedby ARIPO can assist in registering trademark in all ARIPO Banjul ProtocolContracting States. Also, there will be no need of paying cost in each country. The fees will be paid direct to ARIPO per the guideline.  This will also help to monitor applicationand other post registration activities such as renewal since it will be asingle application that includes many countries.

Currently you can protect yourtrademarks through ARIPO in 12 member states namely Botswana, Eswatini,Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Gambia, Sao Tome and Principe,Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.
